Recent guests Brent and Anna just sent some just excellent photos from their trip west. Full of color, perspective, and awe, the photos delve into the natural landscape of Hiouchi and environs — water, plant life, trees, sun and sky. This is the stuff that makes up my world 24-7; for Brent and Anna, it was just a couple of days.
In his photography, Brent captured elements of what makes this part of the country unique — the stature of the trees, the clarity of the light, the color of the rivers. I regret not delving deeper into Brent’s knowledge of photography (but I did get some super cool photos to ponder!).
Anna also left behind something of lasting value when she shared her interest in agates — rocks jammed with micro-crystals that lie unsuspectingly by the sea and rivers. One night during their stay we had ourselves a little Show and Tell with Brent and Anna dousing the lights and strategically using a flashlight to highlight the translucency of these little buggers (which, according to Anna, are generously sprinkled on Oregon and California beaches and river banks).
This place — ways to see it and the various scientific truths that lurk here — will probably always baffle me.
