It’s that time of year when treehuggers around the globe shed their rain gear and galoshes and make haste to engage in their favorite pastime.
Those with the most grandiose of aspirations make a beeline for the redwoods of Hiouchi where the hugging cannot be beat. With hugging on my mind I was excited to hear from Claudia who is due from Germany this summer. Whetting my curiosity is this photo she graciously sent along with her reservation. Yes, that’s Claudia hugging a redwood. But not just any redwood.
Attached is a picture of me from the redwoods in the Wilhelma, Claudia wrote. The Wilhelma, a zoo and botanical garden in Stuttgart, is the site of the oldest and possibly largest redwood grove in Germany. Claudia recounts that in about 1860 King Wilhelm brought seeds from the redwoods to Stuttgart, and since an earlier trip to California, Claudia visits the Wilhelma grove regularly.
Sure, you can hug a redwood anywhere, even Germany, but the best bark by far is here in Hiouchi.
Looking forward to your stay Claudia!
