Almost everything about the outdoor experience here (and what else is there besides the rivers, trees, fish, and waves: aka the outdoors) is massive and grand. Not least among those outdoor experiences are ones that relate to the ocean. Does it get much bigger than the Pacific Ocean?
But sometimes it takes a good deal of squinting to see what the largeness offers. Enter the razor clam, a bivalve mollusk about the size of small hand that hides a few inches below the surface of the beach.
With a super low tide a few days ago, Meg, Larry and I scoured Crescent City’s South Beach for this delicacy.
The day kicked off at 5AM with a drive to the beach. Coffee helped. A borrowed shovel came in handy. Larry’s advise, again, was essential.
Not that they didn’t put up a fight (when you spot a clam and start to dig, they make a run for it and burrow deeper and deeper in the sand), but by days’s end our take was near-limit — 47 clams between us.
Some days the animal kingdom rules but today the clams of Crescent City didn’t have a chance.
